It is financial support from the Unemployment Insurance Fund for qualifying contributors who receive less than their normal pay while on maternity leave. The UIF decides whether a claim qualifies.
A little less wondering.
A lot more clarity.
Straightforward answers to the questions that come up before, during and after a maternity claim.
No. Time off work, salary paid by an employer and money paid by the UIF are separate. Your employer confirms your leave and pay arrangements; the UIF assesses your benefit claim.
No. UIFAssist is an independent service. It cannot approve a benefit, change a government decision or move a claim ahead in the UIF queue.
Yes. The official UIF application service and government forms are free. You can use UIF Online or ask a Labour Centre for help. Any UIFAssist educational product is separate from the government service.
The sample pack explains the paperwork using clearly marked fictional examples. Our guide helps you understand the official submission steps. Availability and scope of document checks or assisted services are shown on the Services page.
The official guidance covers UIF contributors receiving less than normal remuneration during maternity leave. It also requires at least 13 weeks of employment before application. Your record and circumstances still need UIF assessment.
Generally, there is no loss of pay for the UIF to replace if you receive your full normal remuneration. Tell the UIF about all salary paid during leave.
You may qualify for a top-up. The UIF compares your normal income with your income during leave and applies its benefit limit. Declare all employer payments accurately.
Domestic workers are included in UIF when the relevant employment and contribution rules apply. The exclusion for work of less than 24 hours per month is assessed for each employer.
The UIF guidance includes accepted foreign-national identity documents. Use the identity and employment documents relevant to your situation and ask the UIF to confirm any additional requirements.
UIF is linked to qualifying employment and contribution records. Running your own business does not automatically create a maternity-benefit entitlement. Confirm your actual employment status and record with the UIF before buying help.
An employment change needs an individual assessment. Tell the UIF the exact dates and reason employment ended. Do not assume that eligibility for maternity benefits also means eligibility for unemployment benefits.
Ask your employer for accurate UIF declarations and keep payslips showing deductions. Contact the UIF or a Labour Centre about missing employment records. A deduction on a payslip alone does not prove the UIF record is complete.
Your recorded employment history must be accurate. Gather the relevant employer details and ask former or current employers to correct missing declarations when the UIF requests them.
Start gathering documents before leave and apply promptly. Section 25 allows maternity applications before or after childbirth, within 12 months after the birth.
Yes. Start with your identity, employer, pay and bank records. Your medical practitioner or registered midwife supplies the required pregnancy evidence; provide birth evidence when the UIF asks for it.
Ask the UIF promptly about your options and any appeal procedure. Late acceptance is not guaranteed. Paying a private provider cannot extend a legal deadline or guarantee that a late application will be accepted.
You may still be within the application period. Declare the actual leave, income and return-to-work dates so the UIF can assess the eligible period. Do not claim to still be on leave after you have returned.
We are sorry for your loss. Official guidance provides for maternity benefits after a third-trimester miscarriage or stillbirth, subject to the applicable requirements. Ask the UIF what medical evidence it needs for your circumstances.
This version focuses on maternity claims. Adoption, commissioning-parental and other parental benefits can involve different categories and evidence. Confirm the correct benefit with the UIF.
Do not assume that they do. Leave rights and UIF payment rules are separate. Check the rules and implementation that apply to your claim dates, especially for shared parental leave.
The Department describes maternity benefits as 66% of income, subject to a monthly income ceiling of R17,712. Employer payments and the approved period affect the final amount. An estimate is not an award.
Official maternity guidance states a maximum of 121 days. The UIF confirms the period payable on your claim, including your actual leave and remuneration.
There is no guaranteed date. Missing documents, employer records, bank verification and system delays can affect progress. Keep your reference number and follow up through the official portal or UIF contact centre.
The UIF pays the approved benefit to the accepted bank account. UIFAssist does not receive or hold your benefit payment and cannot release it.
Use the account and verification documents accepted by the UIF for your claim. A mismatch between identity and bank information can delay verification. Do not substitute another person's account without the UIF's written direction.
Check the recorded bank details and follow up with the UIF using your claim reference. Keep the payment message. Do not pay anyone who promises to unlock or release your UIF money.
Start with your identity document, bank proof, maternity application and medical or birth evidence. Your employer supplies leave-income and employment or salary records. The exact list depends on the UIF's current request.
It is the maternity-benefit application form. You complete your details, and the medical practitioner or registered midwife completes the relevant medical certification. Leave UIF-official sections for the UIF.
It records remuneration received while you are still employed but on leave. Your employer completes the relevant monthly amounts and signs the declaration. Include part-pay or other remuneration accurately.
It authorises payment into the verified bank account. The attached form has sections for the financial institution and the claimant. Follow the current UIF verification instructions and use authentic bank confirmation.
It is the employer declaration of employee and employment information. Ask your employer to ensure your UIF record is accurate. A separate form may be requested when declarations need to be confirmed or corrected.
It records your earnings and contribution history. Your employer should complete the period and information requested by the UIF, using actual payroll records.
UI-4 is a continuation declaration for maternity-benefit payments. Complete it when requested, using your circumstances on the date you sign. Do not postdate it or treat it as another initial claim.
No. It uses fictional details and is clearly marked as an example. Download the blank official forms and complete them with your own authentic information and required signatures.
No. Only the relevant authorised person may make that declaration. A sample, document check or automated prefill does not replace a genuine signature, certification or bank verification.
Use UIF Online for new employee benefit applications. The Department confirmed in May 2026 that legacy uFiling no longer processes new employee claims. Older screenshots can therefore differ from the current service.
Open the official portal, register or sign in, choose maternity benefits and complete the requested details. Provide the required evidence, check everything, submit and save the confirmation. Follow any further official requests.
No. An upload to UIFAssist is a document for the service you selected. A government submission is complete only when the authorised official channel confirms it. Keep that confirmation.
Your profile shows UIFAssist's case progress and recorded updates. It is not a live connection to the UIF. Use the official portal or UIF contact centre to confirm the government status.
Use UIF Online or call 0800 030 007. Keep your identity and claim reference ready for the official service. You can also visit a Labour Centre.
Ask for the reason and follow the official appeal instructions promptly. Missing documents may need correction rather than an appeal. UIFAssist cannot overturn a decision or promise an appeal outcome.
Use the protected upload area when it is available in your service. Avoid putting identity numbers, bank details or medical information into the general contact form. Check the Privacy Policy before uploading.
No. Do not send passwords, one-time codes, bank card details or recovery codes to us. Sign in to official services yourself and use an authorised process when assistance is required.
The Services page explains each UIFAssist product and its availability. Government forms and direct UIF applications remain free. A private fee never buys an approved claim, extra benefit or priority treatment.
Information reviewed on 25 October 2026 against official sources. Requirements may change. Individual claims are assessed by UIF.
